Beast of the East's Beginnings & Mission
Originally created as the Edgar Martin Classic by Byrd Crawford and Bo McConnaughy in 1989, the Beast of the East baseball tournament is named after longtime coach and athletics director of West Liberty University, H. Edgar "Ed" Martin.

As a 501-C not for profit corporation, the primary mission of the annual tournament is to provide financial assistance to area college and high school baseball programs, the Miracle League Baseball Program, and other charitable programs.
Tournament Evolution
The tournament has evolved exponentially since it's beginning roster of 24 teams on four fields around the Ohio Valley, to 48 teams from 3 states playing on six fields. After publishing a more information and registration online, the tournament has then grown to over 96 teams from several more states across the US, with a mailing list of over 500 teams.

During the 1997-98 tournament, the 12U and 14U brackets originally entered the scene. Several additional fields were added in Ohio and WV, with the tournament peak of 164 teams from every state east of the Missippi along with even teams from Canada.

The tournament now hosts this annual event on 33 fields in three states, with over 700 games played over the span of 4 days. These games are manned by over 90 college umpires, countless volunteers, 75 dozen baseballs, and truckloads of FieldDry and Lime.

Organization's volunteers help prepare the fields, direct traffic, run concession stands, call in scores, and even more during the 4 day event. All the funds raised at each venue stay with the programs in charge of the field, helping to continue and expand their local athletic programs.

The Beast of the East helps generate approximately $9 Milion for the tri-state area each year according to economic impact surveys. The amazing volunteers that help with this event year after year help bring this money into the area to help support local athletic programs across the valley. These volunteers through each organization are what serve as "the engine that makes the Beast run!"
